Social Networking: A Parent's Guide

There are many social networking sites for teens and adults. These sites encourage their members to share information about each other, share videos and photos, use blogs, make some private messaging to connect with their friends online, and simply share interests. Therefore, it is important that parents should be aware of some possible pitfalls that online networking can carry.

There are various networking sites that can catch the interest of teens and even young kids and can attract them to join. Although some youth-oriented networking sites do not allow the kind of communication that other networking sites have for adults and older teens, there are things that parents should do to guide their kids as to how to socialise online. They should help them understand what information should be kept private. It is good to explain to their kids that they should only post information that they are comfortable sharing with others. Also, it is important to tell their kids to avoid sex talk online. It is also good to encourage them to share information about suspicious or threatening messages they have encountered online.

Parents sometimes feel outpaced by their technologically savvy teens. However, there are many things that parents can teach their kids, particularly when it comes to meeting people online. Parents can also join the site where their kids are involved and read the privacy policy section of the site to learn if it is suitable for teens and kids.
