WiredSafety is the largest and oldest free online resource engine focused on providing Internet education, caution and help to all users. It provides information on and solutions to safety issues like scams, child pornography, fraud, identity theft, cyber-bullying, cyber-stalking, spyware, phishing, hacking and viruses. Its executive director is Parry Aftab, a children’s rights advocate and a cyberspace security and privacy lawyer. She ceased her law firm operations to dedicate her time to her work in WiredSafety. She helps to investigate and prevent cyber-crime.
WiredSafety originated in 1995 as a volunteer group that rated Web sites. It now provides education, one-to-one help and extensive information on several interactive technology and Internet issues to net users of any age. The services are provided through an international group that includes volunteers who manage particular programmes and Web sites. All help and work is offered online and for free, with exception to the law enforcement training, speaking programmes, outreach and Teen Angels. Some of the volunteers organise summits and programmes, and speak to schools and community groups worldwide. They teach individuals how to use the Internet responsibly.
Initially established for providing protection and help to Internet users of any age, WiredSafety’s service has recently focused on teens and children. It is working as the umbrella organisation of WiredKids.org, WiredTeens.org and TeenAngels.org. WiredSafety is dedicated to children’s cyberspace protection from abuse and cyber-crimes, as well as other forms of exploitation. Included in these services are protecting them from identity (ID) theft, sexual harassment, hacking and cyber-bullying.
