SixDegrees.com is a social networking website developed and owned by the New York-based company, MacroView, which was created by Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Weinreich. The development of the site is based on the six degrees of separation theory and the Web of Contacts framework of social communication.
As the first known social networking website, introduced in 1997, SixDegrees.com marked the beginning of social networking online. The site was the first to merge profile and network surfing features, thus allowing users to make their own profiles, register the names of their friends and family members on the site, and invite others to connect with them. It enables users to transmit information and messages to their friends, and also to identify their connection to other users listed on the site. If a person affirms a connection with a user listed on the site but prefers not to connect with him/her, that person will still continue receiving messages and friends’ updates.
SixDegrees.com became a valuable tool to connect people, establishing relationships for many years. Although the site has attracted thousands of Internet users, it failed to sustain the business, forcing the service to close in 2000. Weinreich assumed that SixDegrees was just ahead of its time, so he had to close the site. It was also observed that people who were surfing the Internet did not have enough time to establish extended networks to link with their friends. Some users also complained about the limited scope of the service, while others were basically just not fond of knowing strangers.
